Do you need a mentor or a coach? What’s the difference?
Christian mentors offer guidance, encouragement, and wisdom for personal and spiritual growth. Their focus is helping individuals become more like Jesus by learning directly from the Master and Creator. Mentors inspire, advise, and share from their own experience.
Christian coaches, on the other hand, are typically goal-focused. They help individuals identify specific outcomes and guide them to discover solutions as they move toward meaningful change. Coaching is rooted in Christian faith but relies less on giving advice and more on asking the right questions.
The key difference lies in how guidance is delivered: mentors give direction and insight, while coaches guide discovery.
“Most of us are looking for God’s will like it’s a GPS—‘In 500 feet, turn left.’ But God tends to say, ‘Walk with Me,’ and then reveals the next step… right when we need it.”
I offer a blend of both. I am not a certified coach, and if coaching is what you need, I will gladly refer you to someone who is. I personally value both roles in my own life and learn from mentors, books, and a certified coach.
My role is to walk alongside you and help uncover what may be hidden and bring it into the light. I will speak truth in love and offer ideas, encouragement, and support as you grow into a better version of yourself, becoming more like Jesus while also embracing your own God-given, beautiful uniqueness.
“Accomplishing the seemingly impossible requires uncovering the invisible.” — Steven Furtick
God is forming an audacious vision in your life. He has used every experience to shape your character, develop your skills, and prepare you for what He has called you to do.
Here are a few Adrianisms (from Adrian Rogers) to reflect on:
“If you woke up this morning and you are still here, God still has a plan for your life.”
“God’s will for you is not a roadmap; it is a relationship.”
“Stop treating the Bible like a math book and start reading it like a love story.”
“One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: that You, O God, are strong, and You, O Lord, are loving.”
Dare to Declare
Begin with yourself and God. Speak truth over your life daily, regardless of how you feel. As image-bearers of the Creator, our words matter.
Declare:
I have the wisdom of the Lord for every decision I make. (Prov. 2:6; James 1:5)
I have no fear or anxiety. I trust the Lord with all my heart. (Prov. 3:5–6; Phil. 4:6–7)
Finally, start where you are. Learn from those who have gone before you. Some of my mentors include:
God the Father and His Word, Steven Furtick, Adrian Rogers, Norman Vincent Peale, Jeff Olson, Ken Ham, Austin Kleon, Joyce Meyers, Beth Moore, and others.
“If spiritual growth were instant, we’d all be done already. The fact that we’re still a work in progress is kind of the point.”
Don’t wait any longer…
